Rejoice, O hearts that seek the Lord... (Psalm 105:3b)
Our readings today speak of the journeys of the disciples shortly after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Peter and John journey to the temple in Jerusalem, while Cleopas and another disciple are on the road to Emmaus. As they travel on their way they converse about all that has happened to them not only in the last week or so but about everything and anything that has to do with their journey of faith with, in and through Jesus, the Christ. They share words of hope, joy, love, sorrow as well as transformative Resurrection not only with one another but with those they companion along the way. Initially, they are not sure of what to do with and/or how to make sense of this “good news” about Jesus being raised from the dead. Eventually, they did grasp the meaning of what Jesus had been all about, it was right in front of their eyes all the time.
As with the disciples of Jesus and their journey of faith, I, too, do not always grasp the meaning of what was right in front of me all the time. More often than not, I do not catch the true meaning of the transformative Resurrection of a journey ended and a journey begun until something or someone in my life makes it real and tangible. My companions on this journey open up meaning and new life for me that I could never have perceived on my own. They empower me to go to where we have never been, to be beyond our past... to the present moment that lifts us up and transcends death so as to rise in the ever-present light of God’s enduring presence...Alleluia!
