John’s Gospel offers consoling words. But this gift can also get you in trouble, as the Apostles seem to be before the Sanhedrin: the tribunal of rabbis in every city in Israel. The Spirit of God moves the Apostles to continue to witness, despite the threat of death.
As John’s Gospel speaks of different realms, it builds on the story of Nicodemis: you must be born from above, born of the Spirit. Light and darkness, perish or have eternal life, earthly things or things of heaven: such dichotomies. And we do see them at play in our world with such violence and suffering.
We probably don’t live each day with such desperate choices. Long ago we committed to living in the Light of Christ. These Easter days enable us to wonder about the depth of our commitment to live deeply in the Spirit. As we contemplate our evolving universe, the dichotomies don’t seem so clear to me. I see the Light and Spirit in God’s amazing creation.
