"What is to Prevent My Being Baptized?"
Or Re-thinking the Margins
Corinne Sanders, OP

Although a person devoted to reading the scriptures and worshipping in Jerusalem, the eunuch knows he has been relegated to the outside looking in.  However, with Philip’s teaching, he sees and understands that fullness of life is freely offered in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.  He, of course, then asks the next most pressing question, “What is to prevent my being baptized?”

Until now most everything has prevented this man from being fully included in the faith community in which he has worshipped.  At this point in time though, Philip and the eunuch find themselves standing at the margins, at the edges.  They are standing at that intersectional critical place where diversity of life and changed circumstances abound and the questions of life demand new thinking and actions.  This is a turning point.

Philip, brought into the story by the Spirit, rightly understands this.  This is a time where boundaries are to be reconsidered, margins are to be widened and made permeable.  Jesus’ offer of life is to all who listen and learn.  Jesus’ invitation is to all who come to receive the bread of life.

In this spirit filled passage a new day has dawned.  When good news is preached, new realities of inclusion come forth.  The eunuch’s response is infectious joy as he continues along his way rejoicing. Gospel news preached and acted upon brings forth rejoicing.

Today as you venture out from the center, pause, stand at the edge, in the margin, and ponder what needs reconsideration.  When you see barriers to inclusion, question their legitimacy.  Be open to Spirit.  Identify and let go of norms that no longer have life giving purpose.  Choose inclusion.  Preach good news and continue on your way rejoicing.
